The 1896 Emancipation Run - the legendary

"London to Brighton"

For the first time in English history legal restrictions in regard to the use of motor-cars on the public highways, except when preceded by a man with a red flag, had been removed, and we were to be allowed to drive a car on the road at a speed not exceeding twelve miles an hour.

The run from London to Brighton had been arranged to celebrate this important event.

“The date - 14th November 1896." So spoke one of the pioneers of early motoring, who witnessed the occasion. Three de Dion Boutons were entered for the event.

The image to the right is the front cover of the original 10 page programme produced on this famous occasion. Click on the link for a larger version.
